More about Lake Santeetlah and the surrounding area

Ever since I camped on Lake Santeetlah in the early 2000s, I envisioned owning property near or on the lake. Because the lake is surrounded by national forest, it is a quieter more serene lake experience. This side of the lake is particularly quiet and allows for getting away from it all.

Beautiful Lake Santeetlah is one of most unspoiled lakes you'll find in the North Carolina mountains, perhaps the country. About 100 miles west of Asheville along the Indian Lakes Scenic Byway, it's located in the "wild west" of Graham County. Because it's further away from big cities and less developed, it's especially calm. About 80% of the 76-mile shoreline is in the Nantahala National Forest in the shadows of the Great Smoky Mountains. Pristine waters offer great fishing (bass, walleye, bluegill, crappie, bream and lake trout). There are two boat rental facilities on Lake Santeetlah or you can bring your own boat, jet skis, canoes, kayaks or paddle boards. Nearby streams and rivers are world-famous for fly-fishing, whitewater rafting and kayaking. Cyclists will love the challenge of both pavement and gravel road opportunities.

Take a drive on the mile-high Cherohala Skyway in Graham County just 3 miles up highway 143 from the cottage. This is definitely one of the most scenic drives in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The countless mountain views from this 42-mile winding National Scenic Byway show little evidence of civilization. Stop at one of the many overlooks, hike and picnic. Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is 6 miles from the cottage and offers hiking trails. There are several waterfall hikes nearby as well. Both the Appalachian Trail and Bartram Trail are close by.

Chief Junaluska's grave site and Trail of Tears memorial is located in Robbinsville. Stecoah Valley Center offers numerous summer festivals June - mid August. They also have art from artists in the region for sale Monday-Saturday. Other day trips include Great Smoky Mountain National Park, The Cherohala Skyway, Blue Ridge Parkway, Foothills Scenic Parkway, Road to Nowhere near Bryson City, the Smokey Mountain Railroad, and Biltmore Estate in Asheville. Harrah's Casino is located in Murphy and also in Cherokee.
